The Houston Marathon Foundation’s (HMF) after-school running program gains speed for a fourth consecutive year with Aramco as one of its sponsors. This year, the We Run Houston program provides running shoes and athletic apparel for 900 local students to run the half marathon or the 5k race.

The popular health and fitness program introduces children to the benefits of running and teaches life skills while training for the big finish line moment with their peers.

Students receive shirts, running shoes, free race entries, nutrition, transportation, and stipends for training equipment and supplies. Organizers say the number of students continues to grow each year thanks in part to Aramco’s support.

Almost 7,000 local students have trained and finished the half marathon or 5K in downtown Houston, as part of the We Run Houston program since the HMF began supporting youth training programs in 2011.

Empowering young athletes

“Seeing these young runners on the course, full of enthusiasm and potential, is truly inspiring,” said Ahmed AL-Mulhelm, Aramco Americas President & CEO. “We believe in empowering the next generation—not just as athletes, but as leaders and community builders.”

The We Run Houston program provides annual support to local school running groups, ranging from elementary to high school. Students from 31 local schools and youth programs participate with an increased focus on at-risk populations across the Greater Houston area. This includes 20 elementary schools with seven new schools added this year.

Teachers and volunteers help students train to run the We Are Houston 5K presented by Aramco and Chevron or the Aramco Houston Half Marathon. Program participants have been training for months with coaches and mentors leading up to Houston Marathon Weekend, January 9-11, 2026.

“In addition to its longstanding title sponsorship of the Half Marathon, Aramco Americas support allows us to reach out to youth to experience running and get out on the course with professional gear—for many it’s their entry to the sport,” said Wade Morehead, executive director, Houston Marathon Foundation and Committee.
