A familiar site at the scene of disasters is the American Red Cross providing humanitarian aid to individuals and communities in need during times of crisis. Aramco’s support for the organization has added another much-needed emergency response vehicle (ERV) to its fleet serving the Texas Gulf Coast Region.

“ERVs are essential components of our disaster relief operations,” said Marissa Bennett, regional philanthropy officer, American Red Cross serving Texas Gulf Coast. “Being able to ensure rapid deployment is vital to reach those in need quickly,” she added. The organization adapts based on the type of disaster such wildfires, floods, or hurricanes with the vans delivering food, supplies, and support to communities.

Recently, the Aramco ERV was dispatched to support an apartment fire on the north side of Houston. Residents were able to receive blankets, hot meals, and snacks. The vans are equipped to distribute emergency supplies such as comfort kits containing personal hygiene items, tarps, and tools for cleanup efforts.

This next-generation ERV is easier to drive with lower maintenance costs and has ample storage for food, water, and supplies—key ingredients to help those affected by disasters. The new vehicle includes improved safety features, like rearview cameras, as well as enhanced ergonomic systems to help Red Cross volunteers load and distribute food, cleanup supplies, and other essential relief items.

Helping on the road to recovery

The Red Cross plays a vital role in comforting and connecting people with the support they need. ERV staff assist in setting up shelters and providing information about available resources during a challenging time.

According to Bennett, in Houston there are between seven to ten home fires in any given week so ERVs are a vital asset.

The deep historical roots of the American Red Cross, from its founding in 1881and response to notable disasters throughout U.S. history, has made their iconic ERVs the heart of disaster relief and recovery work.

Recently, the Aramco-sponsored ERV was part of Houston’s downtown Veterans Day parade in November. The “Houston Salutes American Heroes Veterans Day Celebration” drew large crowds since Texas has the largest veteran population in the nation with over 250,000 veterans in residence.

The Aramco funding was provided through the company’s Citizenship program and its commitment to having a positive impact on the community.
