Watch: Aramco supports FIRST Robotics to build STEM skills

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was awarded a three-year grant by Aramco to expand access to its afterschool STEM educational programming for high school students from underserved communities across Texas, Michigan, and the Chesapeake Region which includes Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC.

FIRST combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of engineering to create an experience that students will never forget. During the past school year, Aramco’s support allowed FIRST to add over 100 new teams and nearly 3,000 students.

Company recognized during robotics competitions

Aramco was recognized for its support throughout February, March, and April at the Texas, Michigan, and Chesapeake Region high school championships and at the World Championships in Houston, TX which was attended by 25,000 of some the best and brightest students from across the globe.

“These events really bring it all together,” said Judy Sultan, supervisor, Corporate Citizenship. Sultan helped kick off the Texas State Championship featuring 86 teams with over 2,000 students competing. She applauded the organizers, mentors, and coaches who volunteer their time and talent to shape the workforce of the future and prepare students to become leaders.

FIRST in Texas President Jason Arms summed it up nicely. “FIRST is more than robots. We develop diverse students. We teach life skills, like conflict resolution, budgeting, marketing, and leadership and, most importantly, self-confidence.”

“Geared Up” to create a network of mentors

FIRST’s success depends on adult mentors who volunteer their time and knowledge guiding teams of students. FIRST Chesapeake hosted the Geared Up Mentor Conference in early May at Johns Hopkins University.

Through workshops, panels, and networking opportunities the inaugural, one-day event empowered and equipped over 200 mentors with the knowledge and tools needed to guide the next generation of innovators.
