Aramco Research Center-Boston

Multidisciplinary research on key elements of complex energy challenges.

From innovative materials to the deployment of nano-agents to monitor and analyze reservoirs, our multidisciplinary research in Boston works on key elements of complex energy challenges.

Located next to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, this center specializes in computational reservoir modeling, advanced separation systems and materials, nanotechnology, and novel corrosion-resistant materials for oil and gas and chemical applications.

One of its initiatives is an entirely new material to increase crude-to-chemical conversion from 50 to 70 percent. Another is a reservoir simulation tool, TeraPOWERS, which allows engineers to virtually look inside a reservoir to view its rock formations in incredible detail.

Our scientists are also advancing research in the field of nanoparticles. They are working on Resbots — particles that are 10,000 times smaller than a typical thickness of human hair — which can be injected into wells and cracks in rock formations to retrieve valuable information that can help improve production, maximize recovery, and locate new discoveries.

Our Advanced Materials Team is using the latest equipment and methods to control steel corrosion, an age-old problem that causes trillions of dollars in damage not just to the energy industry, but to other sectors such as utilities, transportation, and infrastructure.

Collaborations with MIT and other local research centers gives us access to top researchers, innovators, national laboratories, and governmental agencies engaged in developing and promoting the transfer of new lower carbon technologies. This enhances our activities in the fields of renewable energy; carbon capture, utilization, and storage; environmental sciences; energy storage; water conservation and reuse; and other technologies including artificial intelligence and robotics.
